Eaton: Expert in Uninterruptible Power Supply
Power fluctuations have become common these days. Data volumes are constantly increasing and the needs of users have also increasingly focused on IT security and availability. Therefore, the need for reliable IT infrastructure is rapidly increasing and necessary for the highest level of IT security and availability.
EPS is an authorized Eaton service partner
Ralf Enderlin, Head of UPS Application & Service (Eaton Electric GmbH), is pleased about the cooperation and gets to the heart of the topic: “In the event of problems with the public power grid, we take over the secure power supply by generating a new AC voltage. In order to be able to guarantee safe operation, the systems have to be maintained – but the maintenance is very intensive, especially to ensure availability.”
Areas of application of UPS systems
UPS systems are used wherever a secure transmission of sensitive data is required. The focus of the application is therefore on data centers. In detail, these include the following areas:
- Industrial plants
- Telecom Systems
- Alarm systems
- Access systems
- Medical care systems
- Warehouses
- Private areas
What is a UPS system?
The typology of the UPS system plays a major role in the application. Offline, line-interactive UPS systems or UPS systems with double-conversion technology track different safety parameters: “Offline is the cheapest option, because the UPS system only starts up in the event of short power outages, otherwise it runs in standby mode. The Line Interactive is constantly working alongside the network, but the UPS system only intervenes in the event of real malfunctions. The system with double-conversion technology, the safest of all, works constantly between the grid and the consumer and therefore offers the greatest safety. There is a constant conversion of the voltage into direct and alternating voltage,” Ralf Enderlin continues.
Good reasons for a reliable and secure IT infrastructure
The Intelligent Power Management Software, abbreviated IPM Software, is a reliable fault and failure detector for UPS systems and systems. The software ensures business continuity and supplies the IT infrastructure with energy. Power infrastructure includes environmental sensors, automatic transfer switches, smart power strips (ePDUs) and uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS).
With the IPM software , EPS’s service technicians are able to detect and minimize disruptions in the energy supply of individual but also several servers and end devices centrally and virtually, even remotely. In the event of longer outages, hosts are gradually shut down in a controlled manner, VM migration plans are triggered, and unimportant devices are shut down. Only the most important consumers are supplied with electricity until normal operation is up and running again.
The IPM software works like a display on which all work processes and end devices are visible. Errors are communicated in the form of emails, audible alarms, pop-up alarms, or text messages.
Monitoring function of the IPM software
Not only the power supply is monitored by IPM software, but also the temperature and humidity. Whether water penetrates the system or there is a fire alarm – all these risks can also be detected quickly and reliably by the IPM software.
IPM software – added value for our customers
- IT reliability and security are increasing
- Acquisition costs are offset by the higher efficiency of the system
- Uptime, productivity, and responsiveness increase.
