Geo-redundant data center solution for SAN Group

Maria-Anzbach/Herzogenburg – New construction of company headquarters is a cost- and time-consuming challenge in many respects. For the SAN Group’s new corporate location in Herzogenburg, Lower Austria, the globally active biotechnology company needed a fail-safe and sustainable IT and data center infrastructure that efficiently supplies the local company headquarters and all other locations.

The server room professional EPS Electric Power Systems was entrusted with this challenging project. The two companies are thus continuing a successful cooperation, as the SAN Group has already been able to convince in the past with its expertise and long-lasting complete data center solutions.

“EPS planned and built two identical and geo-redundant data centers, which, in addition to a hybrid cloud solution, ensure maximum availability even if one of the two data centers fails,” explains Andreas Hahn, Head of IT at SAN Group, adding: “Our hybrid solution offers us a lot of flexibility, optimizes costs and latencies, and increases our data security.”

"Through close coordination between all project participants, precise plant and assembly planning and the use of innovative components, we were able to create a sustainable solution with high availability for SAN Group."

Two data centers – maximum flexibility

The implementation of the two server rooms took place in 2 stages. First, the data center was built in the industrial building, then the one in the main building, which was completed in autumn 2023. Close coordination with the responsible architects and specialist planners was required here, as a server room was to be positioned centrally in the office building. A comprehensive protection zone concept, which includes a separate UPS room and technical room, has been developed. Redundant Eaton 93PS IT-UPS systems were installed at each site, with batteries housed in a separate room to ensure room conditions and safety requirements in accordance with current standards and business continuity. Other safety features such as an early fire detection system, a higher-level alarm and monitoring system and a digital leak warning system were also implemented. “Thanks to close coordination between all project participants, precise plant and assembly planning and the use of innovative components, we were able to create a sustainable solution with high availability for SAN Group,” explains Peter Reisinger, Sales Manager at EPS.

Sustainability thanks to innovative server room cooling

The ecological cooling of the two server rooms should be emphasized. At its company site, SAN Group uses natural groundwater sources,

which are obtained through deep drilling instead of resorting to environmentally harmful refrigerants. This methodology supports SAN Group’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2027.
