“Green” is the trump card at nextlayer – Green IT for the server room from EPS
As promoters of “green IT”, the Internet service providers and data center operators attached great importance to “the small print” in various technical data sheets during the conversion of the former PSK data center: the energy key figures. And that’s when Rene Avi, CTO at next layer, immediately pricked up his ears when he spotted an efficiency of up to 94.5% in normal operation and even up to 99% in the ESS (Energy Saver System) energy-saving mode of the Power Xpert 9395 UPS double-conversion UPS from Eaton: “In our opinion, efficiency is the most important differentiating criterion between the individual manufacturers of uninterruptible power supply systems. We really use the economy effect propagated by Eaton to the limit and drive the Power Xpert 9395 UPS in a highly efficient mode because it is quite close to the grid,” reveals the network and infrastructure manager at next layer. In concrete terms, this means that as long as the mains voltage and the mains frequency are within acceptable limits, the 9395 supplies the load directly with mains power in ESS mode. However, sophisticated detection and control algorithms immediately sound the alarm if any fluctuations occur and, if required, switch to power converters in less than two milliseconds.
Double bypass for the server room as a special extra
Rene Avi is a thoroughbred technician. He knew exactly how or what he wanted in “his” new data center in terms of infrastructure,” recalls Peter Reisinger, the EPS (Electric Power Systems) employee who was at the forefront of the electrotechnical execution of the next layer data center at Fleischmarkt. Originally, EPS was “only” brought on board as a supplier and implementation partner because of the power cabinets. In the end, however, the data center specialists from Maria Anzbach also lent a hand with the access system, the power distribution, the alarm system and the Eaton UPS including battery pack. The most “exotic” result of this successful co-production is probably a double bypass construction . Despite years of experience as a planner of professional IT environments, Peter Reisinger had never seen anything like it. But next layer decidedly demanded that in the event of a malfunction of a dynamo, there is also further redundancy here. His task was to u. a. to check whether this special request even fits into the applicable normative scheme. “Behind such a solution is a huge copper system. Of course, this had to be carefully planned,” emphasizes Peter Reisinger.
