Background of the data center project

Renewable energies and the responsible use of resources – this is what distinguishes the company W.E.B Windenergie AG, headquartered in Pfaffenschlag, Lower Austria. The internationally successful company has been focusing on renewable energies with a focus on wind power for over 20 years. With the current operation of 205 wind turbines, 16 photovoltaic systems and 3 small hydroelectric power plants, W.E.B not only produces clean electricity, but also provides numerous impulses towards sustainable electricity generation and supply. But W.E.B is more than just an energy producer. The company has been on a stable growth course for years and is constantly working on innovative concepts to implement decentralized energy supply from sustainable sources and to play a leading role in the energy transition.

Challenge of the server room project

Against the backdrop of the company’s continued growth and the high security and risk regulations within the group, the need for a central and fully redundant server room became ever greater. So the IT team, led by head Markus Haidl, decided to develop efficient concept solutions for the Planning and construction of the new server room Obtain. The company EPS Electric Power Systems GmbH with a branch in Groß Gerungs, which has been known for many years for the planning and implementation of high-availability data center infrastructures in Central Europe, was commissioned. According to Jürgen Binder, who is responsible for programming and application connection, the decision in favor of EPS was not difficult: “With EPS, the overall concept was simply right. Starting with the high quality of the products to the redundant design and the professional project management, the offer convinced us.” The geographical proximity as a Waldviertel company was also considered a great advantage for successful cooperation.

Solution of the server room project

After planning and site determination, the implementation of the server room infrastructure began at the beginning of 2016. The innovative overall concept, including an A/B UPS system, redundant air conditioning systems, early fire detection and a monitoring system, was installed and put into operation within a few weeks. In particular, the complete redundancy of the two UPS systems (Eaton 93PS) and the air conditioning systems was a concern of the company W.E.B. in order to ensure sufficient time for the retrofitting of the infrastructure in the event of a failure and to exclude possible safety risks. Great importance was also attached to the use of energy-saving products. The UPS and air conditioning systems guarantee high efficiencies and low energy losses, even at low outputs. For a company that was growing steadily, it needed a solution that would allow the server room landscape to be doubled or tripled if necessary.

With the expertise of EPS Electric Power Systems GmbH, a server room has now been created that will ensure sufficient capacity for the next few years even if the wind power generator expands. “Since flexibility and expandability for the next few years were very important to the customer, we planned the necessary components in such a way that high availability is guaranteed with a small footprint and the overall server room solution can be constantly expanded,” explained Peter Reisinger, Sales Manager at EPS and long-time expert in the DCIS (Data Center Infrastructure Solutions) industry. Markus Haidl looks into the new server room and is visibly pleased with the successful cooperation with EPS: “We are very happy to have found a provider on an equal footing with EPS, where the aftercare is also suitable. I would choose EPS again.”
