What dangers lurk in the data center?

Which risks threaten my data center?

Threats to a data center are everywhere these days. They can arise from the outside in the form of power outages, lack of access control or even hacker attacks. However, dangers of an internal nature are often still underestimated, although they are essential for the security and availability of a data center or data center. server room. It is above all employees who have a certain “power” due to their appropriate technical and local knowledge and thus pose a significant threat to IT systems in the company.

3 groups can be shown:

  1. IT infrastructure and technology: Hazards of loss or failure of an infrastructure
  2. People: Abuse, sabotage, carelessness of internal or targeted hacking, vandalism by external persons
  3. Weather: Natural disasters and global warming will continue to increase in the coming years. Hail damage or flooding can be the result.

For maximum security in the server room, targeted risk management, which is carried out continuously, is indispensable. This is the only way to identify the weaknesses of a server room and initiate targeted measures against possible risks of a short or longer outage.

How secure is cloud computing or the cloud?

The topic of security in the data center is not insignificant with regard to cloud computing. The cloud system is simple, but it can quickly become dangerous for a company’s data. No one can say for sure where the data goes, where it is stored, who has access to it, and what happens to it in the event of a hack attack. The cloud solution may be cheap and convenient for a company, but it is not necessarily cheaper from a company’s point of view due to its incalculable risks. In the worst case, this solution can even threaten the existence of a company due to data misuse or loss. It is also important to be careful when choosing a cloud provider: data protection and IT security must be placed at the highest level when looking for the right cloud solution.

How can I protect my data center / server room?

The significance of these data center threats must be explained to all data center managers, their employees and also the management in the company. Awareness of risk scenarios and responsibility must be created. Neutral risk analyses, identification and evaluation of threats and dangers as well as their results must be carried out on an ongoing basis and then discussed in the team.

Peter Reisinger, Sales Manager at EPS: “Companies are dependent on modern technologies. Therefore, they are well advised to keep their systems up to date and ensure the highest possible protection.”

For maximum security in the server room, targeted risk management, which is carried out continuously, is indispensable. This is the only way to identify the weaknesses of a server room and initiate targeted measures against possible risks of a short or longer outage. This plan should also be communicated to higher authorities.

The decision whether a company moves its data to the cloud or operates its own data center should be analyzed in detail by comparing total costs . Even with a cost advantage, data center operators should be aware of the enormously high risks in the event of misuse. If the investment costs allow, an additional, in-house data center, if possible on the company’s own premises, would be an advantage.
