Sustainability in data centres: EPS’s solution

Energy-efficient server room

Data centers are the pulsating heart of our digital world. At the same time, however, this IT infrastructure is one of the largest energy consumers in the world. This raises a central question: How can the enormous energy demand and heat generation of digitization be reconciled with our ambitious sustainability goals? To find an answer to this, let’s first clarify an essential question: What actually defines an energy-efficient data center today?

How does a data center work?

A data center is like a home for our digital world. Just as we build our own four walls in an energy-efficient way, equip them intelligently and protect them safely, we build and operate our server rooms according to the most modern, environmentally friendly criteria. But what does that mean in concrete terms? While insulation and heating count in house construction, in the data center it is mainly factors such as cooling, power supply and security technology.

The heart of digitalization with a focus on data sovereignty

The IT infrastructure components of modern companies find their secure home in the local data center: high-performance servers that store business-critical data, process internal processes and make applications available around the clock. Instead of anonymous cloud structures, companies retain full control over their own systems. Connected via dedicated networks, this infrastructure forms the reliable foundation for tailor-made on-premise solutions and direct digital communication within the company.

A data center as a decentralized power plant

As mentioned at the beginning, servers produce enormous waste heat during operation, much like the radiators in a house. To ensure that the heart of every company works reliably, sophisticated cooling systems are indispensable. Modern data centers such as our dendora®, the innovative wooden data center container, go a decisive step further here: They consistently rely on free cooling and intelligent waste heat utilization in order to radically optimize energy consumption. For us, it’s more than just technology, it’s an attitude. As Peter Reisinger, Managing Director of EPS, aptly puts it: “We see it as our responsibility not only to reduce energy consumption, but to actively create added value for society.”

More than energy: Avoid soil sealing

For us, operating sustainable data centers means much more than just energy efficiency. It also means consistently taking ecological aspects and the avoidance of soil sealing into account. A major advantage of dendora® is its design as a decentralized data center. The compact, modular concept allows us to make optimal use of existing space instead of developing new plots. In this way, we create an infrastructure that is in harmony with its surroundings instead of burdening them.

Data Center Security Zones

Just as a home provides protection, the data center ensures security:

  • Safety zone and EMC concept
  • RC3 Security Door with Two-Factor Authentication
  • physical and technical fire protection and emergency power systems.
  • Burglar alarm system and video surveillance
  • Emergency power system with automatic changeover system
  • Leakage system
  • Emergency power system with automatic changeover system
  • Higher-level environmental monitoring and alarm system

Sustainable wooden data center

We think beyond technology:

  • CO₂ reduction through 100% wood from the region as a renewable building material
  • Free-cooling air conditioning systems with natural refrigerants
  • Monitoring for key figure determination such as PUE, CE, ERF, REF and WUE
  • Heat recovery and waste heat recovery
  • Avoidance of soil sealing thanks to compact and modular system

Security and efficiency under one roof: The data center is the reliable home for the digital world of companies. With our sustainable solution dendora®, we show that we take responsibility – for your data and for our environment. Digitization and sustainability are a perfect match for us.
