Maria-Anzbach/Leoben – Mayr-Melnhof Holz is one of the leading companies in the woodworking industry in Europe, a market leader in the glulam segment and in the production of cross-laminated timber. The company, which has around 1,635 employees, opened a new high-tech production plant for cross-laminated timber with a production area of around 33,000 m² at the Group’s site in Leoben in the summer of 2023. To ensure uninterrupted operation, it requires a reliable and robust power supply.
“Meeting the high power and power requirements as well as safeguarding against the risk of failure are crucial for the smooth running of production. We therefore opted for the power solution from EPS because it offers a high degree of safety while at the same time being modular, and is geared towards durability,” explains Manuel Staber, overall project manager at Mayr-Melnhof Holz for the cross-laminated timber plant in Leoben.
Together with the engineering firm Rudlof GmbH , EPS Electric Power Systems has developed a tailor-made overall concept that ensures reliable operation for Mayr-Melnhof Holz. Central topics were identified: PLC controls to prevent short interruptions from leading to a production standstill, the all-round power supply of the production cranes and safety mechanisms in the area of fire protection, as well as the supply of IT equipment.
Another key aspect of the project was the use of sustainable and EU-manufactured UPS energy storage systems with lithium iron phosphate batteries. These not only offer high temperature resistance and long service life, but also have a small footprint, which further increases the efficiency of the system.
Largest Eaton UPS system in the DACH region – manufactured in the Waldviertel region
In order to meet the high power requirements at the production site and to ensure sufficient availability, three Eaton UPS systems (2 Eaton 93PM and 1 9395P-CX) were installed. With an output of 900kVA/900KW, the modular and scalable IT UPS 9395P-CX in combination with the CX-Conect Panel is a first-time solution in the entire DACH region. The integrated CX-Connect connection panel, which enables a direct CU rail connection to the external bypass switches, bypass input breakers, rectifier input breakers without any wiring, was custom-made for Mayr-Melnhof Holz in Schrems.

It fills me with particular pleasure that the production of the systems has been carried out to a large extent locally in our plant in Schrems, and thus a significant part of the value creation remains in Austria.”
