EPS Philips Austria Server Room Vienna

Philips Austria – Server room with UPS systems Vienna

It was the company EPS Electric Power Systems that came and presented a corresponding all-round package including a UPS system, emergency power generator and a particularly energy-efficient cold air control system for the server cabinets. All this in just a few weeks just in-time. “All switches, switches, and switches were designed redundantly. The UPS protection is provided by two 40 kW 93PM units from Eaton with redundant battery system in a separate room. All systems have their own supply lines, we work with internal and external bypasses – with this solution, Philips is supplied with electricity in an absolutely fail-safe manner, right down to certain workstations equipped with emergency power sockets,” explains EPS Managing Director Josef Frühwirth. In the event of longer power outages, a diesel generator immediately steps in as a supplier. The rest – short-term bridging and the elimination of voltage fluctuations that are severely annoying to some end users – is taken care of by the Eaton UPSs. Because as online double-conversion systems, the 93PMs are intended to first rectify and then change everything that comes in at the front. In the end, only a perfect sine is emitted.

Power factor of 1, an efficiency of 96.7 % in double-conversion operation

In addition, these devices score with a power factor of 1, an efficiency of 96.7% in double-conversion operation and an intuitively operating, meaningful LCD color touchscreen. “These UPSs are produced in Espoo, Finland. I know this plant and have been selling products from there since 1999. The manufacturer names have changed over the years, but the product quality has remained the same,” emphasizes EPS Managing Director Josef Frühwirth. In the data centers he designs, he only installs proven solutions of which he himself is 100 percent convinced.

Result of the server room design

During the design of the new server room, corresponding reserves were provided. “The footprint was dimensioned for twelve server racks. However, we can expand the rack servers if necessary, install more power in the individual racks and equip the UPS cabinets with additional modules. In addition, the electrical distribution, including air conditioning, has been designed in such a way that we can up to double the current output – and without downtime,” says Josef Frühwirth. He refers to another extremely effective tool from Eaton that prevents any downtime: bypass technology. The internal UPS bypass at Philips, already integrated into the 93PM Eaton UPS, has been combined with an external bypass switch for an absolutely safe switch to the emergency power system. For Walter Cerny, all this means that he can now stay cool in any case. Even if he is informed that the diesel emergency generator installed on the roof will soon start humming in the course of a full-load test. “During the first test run, I was still totally tense. In the meantime, I know that everything is working out perfectly,” says the Multi Site Service Delivery Manager at Philips Austria, pleased with an all-round successful server room project.

About the Eaton UPS 93PM (30kVA – 500kVA)

The Eaton UPS 93PM (30kVA-500 kVA) combines efficiency and reliability with a modern design. Eaton’s space-saving yet flexible UPS system is the perfect three-phase solution for server rooms and data centers. Eaton’s 93PM UPS’s on-line double-conversion technology provides long-term protection for critical loads, especially in common power supply problems. The Green IT-Power converter concept of the Eaton 93PM UPS gives the UPS system a market-leading maximum efficiency of 96.7% and thus noticeably reduces operating costs during operation. Another advantage is the output power factor with cos phi 1.0 – this means that the Eaton 93PM UPS delivers significantly more power than conventional UPS systems.

Investment in the digital future: HABAU relies on data centre from EPS Electric Power Systems

The HABAU GROUP has invested in the modernization of its IT infrastructure – with a high-availability data center, planned and implemented by EPS Electric Power Systems. The owner-managed family business with around 6,500 employees has been operating internationally for more than a century and is now one of the leading players in the Austrian construction industry. Whether it’s building construction, civil engineering, tunnel construction or pipeline construction, the HABAU GROUP is broadly positioned – and therefore also needs an IT infrastructure that can keep pace with this complexity.
